A “Parade of Bikes” made its way through local streets, but the special ride was about more than motorcycles.

The American Bikers Aimed Towards Education MDA ride aims to raise funds for muscular dystrophy research and patient care.

This is the 32nd year that the event has been held. This year it started at the St. Joseph County fairgrounds on Sunday at 12 p.m.

Among those waving as they took off were those who are dealing with the disease and their families who hope for a cure.

“It’s struggling, it’s very hard to watch somebody that you love and care about…little things, moving their hands, simple things that they are not able to do,” said Pam Benson whose son has muscular dystrophy. “When you come out here and see ones that used to be kids now adults having the same issues, it's very hard."

In its 32-year history, the event has raised $3 million for the cause.
