A local teenager remains in critical condition after a car threw him from his bicycle in western Elkhart County, near Osceola Friday October, 12.
The wreck happened at 6:15 p.m. Friday near the corner of County Road 16 and Highland Ct.
The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department says Darrien Lewis, 17, of South Bend was riding his bike eastbound along County Road 16, just east of Highland Ct., when a 2001 Chevy Monte Carlo struck him from behind.
The collision sent Aaron Hardesty, 19, of Elkhart and his Monte Carlo onto the north side of the roadway where he struck a mailbox and AEP electrical pole.
Paramedics took Lewis to a local hospital in critical condition with internal injuries. Lewis sustained injuries to his head and foot, in addition to several broken ribs. Hardesty was also taken to the hospital with pain to his left collar bone.
According to the Elkhart Truth, Lewis remains in critical condition. His family says he has been making progress and can now look around and respond to commands.
The crash remains under investigation, but drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor, and no citations have been issued.
