A Berrien County father is facing up to five years in prison after he drove his car into the path of an Amtrak Train last month injuring both himself and his young daughter.

That's according to our reporting partners at the Herald Palladium.

Anthony Bearty, 27, pleaded no contest to a charge of driving on a suspended license and causing an accident that led to a serious injury.

The accident happened on Kerlikowske Road in Coloma Charter Township back on November 17.

Police say Bearty was driving with his four-year-old daughter Mikahla, when he ignored the flashing signals and continued across the tracks, colliding with a train.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, Bearty was following another vehicle and it appeared he'd been paying more attention to that car rather than the oncoming train.

Bearty had originally told police there'd been no signal at the crossing as the train approached, but video from the train and other monitors proved otherwise. His daughter suffered a severely broken leg in the crash.

Bearty is scheduled to be sentenced on February 4.
