A Berrien County volunteer reserve sheriff’s deputy who referred to a woman by using a racial slur has stepped down from the force. That is according to our reporting partners at WSJM Radio.

The controversial Facebook comment, which contained the N-word, appeared in a lengthy thread discussing the George Zimmerman trial. In it, Reserve Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Morris identified himself as a deputy then reportedly commented that a woman involved in the discussion was “typical” and used the N-word.

He had since been place on leave but resigned on Thursday and gave the sheriff an apology.

Nikki Nelson, the target of the alleged slur, said that she has known Morris since he taught her in middle school.
