Because they have nothing to compare it to, young children can have hearing and vision problems, and never even know it.
That's why kindergarteners, like Alex Myers, are being screened by the Berrien County Health Department.
Under state law, children starting school in Michigan need to have the test completed so the Health Department is holding free screenings.
It's the goal of the technicians to have all kids entering preschool and kindergarten tested in order to properly read, listen and learn.
Alex's Mom says she's happy she had her son screened.
“I am glad I came out here Wednesday because obviously he needs glasses or something is wrong with his vision,” said Alex’s Mom Adrian Myers. “If I wouldn't of come out here I would of never known his vision was messed up at all. And they gave me paper work so I can go find actual eye doctor to get his eyes checked to help him out. They say he is straining. He is straining when he is looking and I did not know that.”
If your child needs to be checked, The Berrien County Health Department is holding two more free screenings, this Friday in Benton Harbor and Monday, October 1, in Berrien Springs.
