Benton Harbor woman accused of cheating government out of thousands of dollars

Benton Harbor, Mich. A Benton Harbor woman is accused of cheating the government out of thousands of dollars in federal benefits.

50-year-old Rosetta James is charged with lying to the supplemental security income program, and collecting more than $56,000 in benefits. James was approved for benefits in 1996, and then married in 2001.

Court documents allege that James received payments until February of last year after lying that she and her husband were no longer living together.

She also allegedly failed to report $30,000 in income, according to our reporting partners at the Herald Palladium.

James appeared for a hearing in court last month, but is currently free on bond.

If convicted, she will be forced to forfeit the money she received as well as any profit she made from it.
