BENTON HARBOR Benton Harbor expects to find out in the next week who will serve on a board with the authority to override the city commission.

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder will choose the appointees to the Transition Advisory Board. Their job is to help coordinate the shift from a city manager to local control. The board can veto decisions by the city commission that they don't think promote fiscal stability.

“Many Benton Harbor residents see this as a positive moving forward, given some of the decisions the commission has made in the past," Benton Harbor Mayor James Hightower said in his weekly video address.

In the address, Hightower also asked that people quit referring to the city as “cash-strapped.” He says that while it was true even as recently as a few months ago, it is no longer the case.
