Beautiful flowers were planted in Mishawaka’s Merrifield park on Monday, as a troop of 6th graders were learning about community service.

This is the third year that students from Beiger Elementary have worked to help clean up and beautify their local parks.

Earlier this week, the kids helped clean up the rock garden at Battell Park, and they will be returning to plant flowers there as well.

Their teacher, Karen Gradeless, says it helps foster a spirit of community responsibility.
Gradeless says about half of her students this year had never gardened before, so it was a great chance for them to learn a new skill.
