MISHAWAKA, Ind.--- Beiger Elementary School was a sea of purple today in support of the "Month of the Military Child."

April 15 marks "Purple up! Day", a day to recognize children of the armed forces by wearing purple.

The St. Joe County's 4-H club is working to help children of the military to join groups and participate in camps at no cost.

“There's already stresses involved for the military children, they frequently move around the country and they leave their friends behind and have to make new friends over and over,” said Dawn Nielson, Coordinator for Operation Military Kids. “There are a lot of stressors when mom and dad are deployed. So what we do, we support those children through activities and programs, give them that little extra support that they need.”

The color represents every branch of the military, and there was no shortage of it at Beiger Elementary School.

Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood made a little history today as well, officially declaring April 15 "Purple up! Day."
