Basketball standout is cleared to play after tragic plane crash

After surviving a plane crash last year, high school basketball standout Austin Hatch is stepping back onto the court.

In July of last year, Hatch’s family’s small plane crashed into a garage near Charlevoix Michigan. The crash killed his father and stepmother, and this was not the first time Austin lost someone to a tragic accident. Nine years ago his mother died in a plane crash.

The Canterbury High School basketball standout had accepted a scholarship to play at the University of Michigan starting in 2013 before the crash. He has been granted an extra year of high school eligibility, meaning that he can play two additional seasons of high school basketball.

Today Hatch was cleared to begin practicing again on a limited basis.
