A scam has hit several Michiana residents and even confused the experts.
It all starts as a pop up message, reading:
"The system couldn't identify your PC. You will be contacted by a representative of the bank to confirm your personality. Please pass the process of additional verification; otherwise your account will be locked."
Scam experts at the Better Business Bureau say it can be pretty convincing, especially if you happened to be doing online banking at the time. But they say it's essential that you close the window immediately.
“The thing to remember is the last sentence when it says ‘otherwise your account will be locked,’” Better Business Bureau’s Dreama Jensen says. “You think it is your bank, but it is a fake representative that will continue chatting with you and eventually ask for your bank account details. That's what they're after."
Jensen says to avoid opening any attachments or clicking any links within the message. Anyone who does accidentally open something should shut down the computer immediately and call the bank.
The Better Business Bureau stresses that it is extremely rare for a legitimate bank to use a pop-up message. It’s always best to check with the bank before proceeding.
