One day before the annual Christmas bird count, a rare bird was found perched in Elkhart County.

A bald eagle was spotted at the Elkhart Environmental Center on Friday.

Bald eagles are considered a "species of special concern" in the Hoosier State, meaning they are somewhat rare, but can be spotted year round.

A bird hike will be held Saturday at the Environmental Center as part of the annual count.
