SAWYER If you blink, you might miss the small, homelike bakery on the side of Red Arrow Highway in Sawyer, Michigan. But, the new donut shop is doing just fine, pumping out an average of 300 donuts on weekdays and closer to 700 on weekends.
Regular customers say the constantly changing menu full of unique flavors is what keeps them coming back for more.
"I'm on the Hello Donuts diet," said Patricia Lauth, a donut customer. "I've almost been here every day since they opened."
Two sisters, Stacey and Sara, opened the bakery in honor of their grandmother, Margie.
"Our grandma was always baking. She baked cakes for everyone in town, wedding cakes, birthday cakes, whatever you could think of," said co-owner, Stacey Koziel.
"We thought every kid in town had a grandma who had a fridge full of all colored frostings downstairs," said co-owner Sara Mclauchlin.
The two were able to avoid initial financial trouble by using the public's help to start Hello Donuts. Sara and Stacey set a goal of $16,000 through an online Kickstarter campaign.
"We had 30 days to make your goal and we did it and we cried a lot," said Sara as she laughed.
"But, everything from there was kind of a whirlwind from December to now. It was just unbelievable. How many people get to realize their dream?"
Plus, Hello Donuts isn't serving your average fried donut. These sisters are using a lifelong passion for baking to concoct hand-made, baked donuts on a daily basis.
"There's something to say about something you put three days of work into and only get a couple hours worth of product," said Sara.
Hello Donuts is open Thursday-Monday from 6:30 a.m. to noon. For more information, click here for the website.
