For parents, part of your morning routine is likely getting a lunch ready for your child; every year we like to help out by showing you some different ideas your child will love.
Thursday on 16 Morning News, Martin's Supermarket dietitian Maria Haisley joined us with these fun ideas, based on the Bento Box concept:
Bento Box #1: “Sushi Sandwich”
2 slices 100% Whole Wheat Bread (or tortilla)
¼ cup Hummus
¼ cup Shredded Carrots
½ cup Edemame beans
1 Mandarin Orange (to make flower add 1 grape in the middle)
¼ cup sliced red and yellow bell peppers
“Sushi”: Use a rolling pin to flatten out the 2 slices of bread. Spread on hummus and
sprinkle on carrots. Roll tightly, then slice into 1 inch pieces.“Mandarin Flower”: Peel orange, separate pieces and arrange into a flower shape. Use one
grape for in the middle.
Add in the edamame, bell peppers and cheese stick to make it a complete meal!
Bento Box #2: “Applewich n’ Sides”
1 Tbsp. natural peanut butter (or other natural nut/seed butter of choice)
1 Tbsp. raisins (or granola)
Optional: Lemon juice, toothpicks
¼ cup Skinny Pop Popcorn, 1 T Pepitats (pumpkin seeds), 1 T Raisins (mixed like a trail mix)
2 T Grapes
4 slices cucumbers (1 black olive, 1 green olive and egg slice to make happy face)
1 Hard boiled egg
“Applewich”: Cut the Apple into 3 - ¼ inch ring slices. Cut out the core in a circle). Layer in
between slices the nut butter and a few raisins or granola. Can make using 2 slices of apple
or 3 slices for a “triple decker” Applewich. Add a squirt of lemon juice to keep from
browning. Use toothpicks to hold together if going into lunchbox. Pick up and eat just like a
sandwich, great for breakfast or lunch!
Add all the side items to make a complete meal!
Bento Box #3: “Fry-day Happy Meal”
3 Mini whole wheat pitas
2 T Hummus
1 T natural nut or seed butter
Cheese slicesCarrot and celery slices
¼ cup Granola with raisins
1 Hard boiled egg
“Fry pitas”: Cut the top off the pitas. Put 1 T hummus in 2 of them and 1 T nut butter in
the third. Add in the cheese sicks to a hummus pita and the carrots and celery in the
other hummus pita. Add the apple slices to the nut butter pita. Place everything so they
look like a “small fry”!
“Banana Minion”: With a sharpie, draw a minion face or any face of your choice, your kids
will get a good laugh!
Add in the rest of the side items for a complete meal!
