Baby boomers facing "boomeritis"

According to at least one article, doctors are now using the term "boomeritis" to explain why the "baby boomer" generation is facing more exercise-related injuries. The doctor in the article says, that generation is about age-45.

The article also says "boomeritis" happens because of a mentality the "Baby Boomer" generation grew up on, which is that exercise will lengthen and increase your quality of life. But too much of the same routine can become a problem over time.

Sandy Sampson, a trainor and manager at the Kroc Center in South Bend, says a common reason why "too much of the same" is happening is because of dedication. These folks in particular are used to sticking with something, whether that's a job, a relationship or an exercise routine, "Baby Boomers" are a loyal bunch.

In order to avoid injuries that stem from too common of a routine, Sampson says it's best to put some variety into it. That could be using machines to strengthen different parts of the body, or practicing wtih free-weights and weight-lifting. These types of exercise also help with bone density, and strength.

If you have more questions about exercise and health, contact Sandy Sampson at the Kroc Center. Sampson is also a personal trainor.
