5-year-old shot boy is recovering at hospital in South Bend

Police say a 5-year-old boy was shot in South Bend Thursday night and that it was his 7-year-old brother who pulled the trigger.

Authorities say he is now recovering at an Indianapolis hospital.

It happened at about 8:35 p.m.Wednesday in the 1300-block of North Huey Street on the city's west side.

"It was horrible," said Jimmy Lee Gillam, who lives at the home . "Everybody was just hoping that he is alright."

According to police, the child was shot in the hip and wrist by his brother in the bath tub. A babysitter had been watching over the children that night, but was not in the bathroom when the shooting happened.

"He was struck with a single bullet," Capt. Phil Trent, from the South Bend Police Department. "It went through his left arm then hit him in the hip. So he's got two injuries on two spots on his body but it was one shot that caused that."

No word yet on how the older 7-year-old brother gained possession of the hand gun.

"Everybody's still real hurt from this," Gillam said. "But, we are just trying to figure out. Just trying to get past this."
