A BMX event at the Kitchen Skatepark is bringing some of the best BMX riders in the world to Michiana.

The Pro-Am contest is a labor of love for local BMX star Brett Banasiewicz and his family.

“It was always a family dream,” We’d go to skateparks and contests and say ‘we’d do this, we’d do that.”

She says when Brett got to a higher level of competition, they faced a choice between moving to a place where he could practice or building their own skate park. They decided to bring a The Kitchen Skatepark to South Bend.

The Pro-Am contest at the Kitchen Skatepark is the first professional BMX contest in the United States. Riders fly in from all over the world.

“The Dew Tour and the X Games are going to be looking at who wins,” Lisa says. “You only get to go to the X Games by invitation only.”

The public can watch the event at the Kitchen Skatepark in South Bend.

Lisa says Brett is recovering from a serious head injury two years ago. He is riding again, driving a car and going to school. He recently judged the X Games competition in China.
