After much back and forth between city leaders, Benton Harbor has finally decided how it will spend a $200,000 donation from whirlpool.
Thursday, Mayor James Hightower announced the money will go towards fixing the swimming pool at the Charles Gray Recreation Center, which has been out of service for about two years.
He says the center has been an important asset to the city for a number of years, with the pool being its centerpiece. But without it up and running, the facility hasn't been able to function at its full potential.
The mayor says the renovation project will benefit the whole community, and bring new life to a pool that was used by those in Michiana and beyond.
“It's the only pool of its size in Southwestern Michigan. It's an Olympic-sized pool, can have competitions, is useful for toddlers, to our seniors, it's a community asset that really should be utilized,” he said.
