BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- A local mayor is facing yet another recall -- the third in less than two years.
The first recall petition was filed against Benton Harbor Mayor James Hightower in July 2012, but it never made it to the ballot because some of the signatures weren't valid.
A second was filed in January of this year. And again, it had illegal signatures.
Two people are now charged with election fraud in that case.
Now a third recall petition has been filed -- with language almost identical to the petition filed in January.
All three recalls have focused on Hightower's opposition to an income tax campaign.
Our reporting partners at the Herald Palladium say the most recent recall is on hold because it's not clear if another recall petition can be started before the previous one is done.
The city is waiting on a decision from the Michigan Bureau of Elections.
