It's tax time and for many getting ready to file, hopes are high for a big refund.
But a scam is going around making false promises.
According to the Better Business Bureau, a number of people with a heavy accent are calling pretending to be from the IRS.
They are telling the person answering the phone that the IRS owes them two thousand dollars.
The catch is that in order to get the money, you need to pay nine hundred with a “moneypak” card. The scammers say the fees are for expenses like withholding and processing fees.
Also another warning sign is that the caller requires your bank account information
The BBB is reminding people to never give out personal information to anyone over the phone who they don't know, especially social security or credit card numbers.
Typically the IRS sends out notices in the mail and won't call in person until absolutely necessary.
