At-risk youth join in on Senior PGA Championship

In 2012, when the Senior PGA Championship came to Harbor Shores golf course in Benton Harbor, a local youth outreach program wasted no time finding a way to get involved.

Genesis Outreach works with thousands of at-risk and underprivileged youth in the community. From doing laundry to preparing for the workforce, Genesis provides young adults for life in the real world.

Carolyn Fort, one of the program's coordinators, initiated the partnership with Levy Restaurants back in 2012. Levy is in charge of all the concessions at the tournament and allowed Genesis to sponsor and run one of the concession stands two years ago.

The group did such a good job that they were invited back to the 2014 Senior PGA Championship to run the concession in the hospitality village.

"We love them, and I think they love us," said Fort.

Genesis brought in 81 workers to run the concession stand and several mobile food and drink carts at the tournament.

According to Fort, the youth are learning the importance of responsibility, handling money and keeping books, as well as customer service.
