The first snow of the season caused major problems for drivers, with several sliding into the ditch and a major pile-up on the bypass.

At least six cars were involved in the accident in the westbound lanes of the bypass, just west of the Ironwood exit.

It all started when a Chevy Nova driver lost control on an icy portion of the roadway around 11:30 Monday night.

That set off a chain-reaction crash that included a pickup truck, which rolled and landed on its top. The people inside that pickup seemed to be okay, thanks to a good samaritan who helped them get out.

"We had to help cut the seat belt on the passenger side, get her out, just in case anyone else was coming up," driver Robert Sage says.

Two people were taken to the hospital after the accident, though the extent of their injuries is unknown.

Police say the overpasses are especially dangerous this time of year because there isn't any ground underneath to keep them warm. That's why they tend to freeze faster than the rest of the roadway.

Multiple accidents throughout the early morning hours caused Elkhart County Police to close the bypass from Elm Road to State Road 19.
