NAPPANEE, Ind. A dozen vehicles were involved in a crash on State Road 19 at County Road 48 Thursday afternoon, according to the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department.

It happened just before 2:30 p.m. about two miles north of Nappanee.

Nine people were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

An eyewitness told our photographer on the scene that blowing snow caused a sudden whiteout, resulting in a chain reaction of crashes.

MedFlight was called to the scene but had to turn back due to weather, according to our reporting partners at the Elkhart Truth.

The road was back open by 4 p.m.
