A Christmas Eve fire left three families without a home for the holidays. It happened around 2:30 p.m. in the 300 block of East Harrison in North Liberty, at the Taylor Apartments.

The cause of the blaze is still being investigated, but the landlord says it's likely the building will have to be torn down.

The fire happened at the worst possible time for the people living there, who could only grab a few belongings before evacuating.

"All I did was grab my dog and my son's cat that I'd been babysitting and a couple Christmas presents and left everything else behind," said resident Troy Dillon.

Dillon says the fire started on the top floor of the building and worked its way down the walls into the basement. The smoke and water damage is so bad residents won't be able to salvage much from the ashes.

"You have clothes, pictures, whatever. Whether they caught on fire or they're water or smoke damaged, it's not easy to look at where I'm living and see where all the windows and doors are knocked out," Dillon said.

An extra room was available for residents to stay in Saturday night, but the landlord says they're all staying with friends and family.

No one was injured in the blaze.
