DOWAGIAC A long-running annual event will return in Dowagiac. The 29th Summer in the City is going on July 24-27 in Southwest Michigan.
The 4-day, family friendly event will include three major changes. For the first year, Front Street is closed to through-traffic on Friday and Saturday to allow for summer sidewalk sales. The festival will extend into Sunday for the first time for a family picnic and community worship. And funding for the summertime tradition has also changed.
"We have corporate donations of $12,000," said Dowagiac Chamber of Commerce Board Member, Jim Frazier.
"In the past we were getting grants from a couple different sponsors, one was the Pokagon Fund."
This year the summer festival did not secure that grant, but local corporations and businesses stepped up to continue the annual tradition.
"It has been going on so long we pride ourselves on being able to have the community come together," said Frazier.
Summer in the City starts Thursday evening with a summer concert series in Beckwith Park. Events, including dance and vocal performances, BMX demonstrations, the 40th Steve's Run and 2nd annual Taste of Dowagiac run through Sunday.
