Four years ago, the Mishawaka community lost one of its officers and his canine partner to a drunk driver.

Thursday marks the deaths of Cpl. James Szuba and his dog, Ricky.

Officer Szuba and Ricky were responding to a call when their patrol car was hit at the intersection of Fir and McKinley.

Since then, his police brothers have named the department's firing range in Szuba's honor, where he spent hours training others.

Officer Szuba is remembered as a great trainer, one who could perfectly balance seriousness and fun on the job.
