SOUTH BEND, Ind.--- WNDU’s Angelo Di Carlo got to sit down with Irish Captain/Center Nick Martin after the Notre Dame & Rice game.

Martin talked about how you couldn’t ask for a better way to start the season, and how this victory really helps the Irish team to get the focus back on the field and not on the current academic investigation.

“It’s been great, and through those weeks we became a really close team,” said Martin. “We knew we would come out here and play a clean game, and we did and we got the win.”

Martin also described how he felt about the performance of Irish Quarterback Everrett Golson.

“It’s like watching a video game,” said Martin. “Being on the sideline obviously you can’t see everything that he does but you know when your pass blocking him and your guy takes off left to right, you know he is out there doing something crazy. When the ball soars downfield and you see that touchdown, you know that is something special.”

Martin also talked about how Golson has really developed into the team leader.

“He comes in, he communicates well, he is loud, he is forceful, and people want to follow him. He is the leader of this team,” said Martin.

When asked by Angelo what it meant for him to be a captain on this team he said it was an honor, and that it filled him with a huge sense of pride.

“To represent a team like this, with the tradition and the people who came before me and will come, it’s a sense of pride,” said Martin.

Nick Martin's brother, Zach Martin, had also been an Irish captain the last two years, making the Martin and Golick brothers the only brother duo’s that have ever been captains for the Irish. Martin talked about how special that was as well.

“It’s very special, and it really came to me after he called me when it was announced, and we had a great talk, and you could just tell by his voice that he was just proud to be my brother,” said Martin.

Martin talked about the injury to Irish Captain/Cornerback Austin Collinsworth before the game, and how that impacts the team.

“It is very tough,” said Martin. “Obviously other players look to those guys when times get hard, but Austin’s determination is just unbelievable. He is going to be back as soon as he can, and he will be back out on the field.”

Before the interview ended Angelo asked Martin about next week’s matchup between Notre Dame and Michigan. Martin said the game was going to be a lot of fun, and that they were going to prepare as they do every week.
