Ang in Iowa: 1-on-1 with Muffet McGraw at NCAA Tourney

Angelo Di Carlo is the only local television reporter covering Notre Dame in the women's NCAA Tournament in Iowa City.

On Sunday, the top seeded Irish rolled over Tennessee-Martin 97-64 in the NCAA Opener. The Irish now face host Iowa in the 2nd round Tuesday night at 9:30 with a spot in the Sweet 16 on the line.

On Monday, Angelo chatted 1-on-1 with Irish coach Muffet McGraw.

Angelo: Coach you get the opening round win a big win--were you pleased with your team's effort? It was a slow start but then it seemed like you guys really got rolling?

Coach McGraw: Yeah, I was really pleased with the way we shot the ball--60% in the 2nd half. We got a lot of layups. We used our size advantage to perfection. Took advantage of mismatch inside with Jewell Loyd, Kaya McBride mismatch inside. Scored in a number of different ways.

Angelo: Jewell Loyd--i know at this point in the season--you don't treat her like a freshman anymore but she was like a junior or senior out there.

Coach McGraw: She really was. Freshman, NCAA Tournament, first time--maybe has the jitters but she scored her first basket and never looked back.

(Loyd scored a career high 27 points to lead Notre Dame)

Angelo: Tuesday night, Iowa on its home floor. I know last week when you saw the draw you were worried about it, what are you thoughts now?

Coach McGraw: Well the crowd was big last night, they're loud--they are going to be a factor but playing in Storrs, in Hartford, at Tennesee, playing at DePaul--we have some experience going in.

Angelo: You have that upperclassmen leadership--you have Skylar, you have Kayla, you have Natalie---in these situations, I'm sure you definitely lean on them in particular?

Coach McGraw: We'll definitely lean on them. We gotta come out and take the crowd out of the game.
