Amtrak unveils 110 mph train service

A new high speed train is rolling through the Midwest and cutting down travel time to destinations like Chicago.

Amtrak unveiled its new rail service that will travel at 110 miles per hour. It is the fastest service in the country outside the Northeast corridor.

“We’ve been waiting for it for a long time,” Kalamazoo resident Bill Schomisch said.

An expansion that officials said will help make smaller communities on the route more accessible.

“It’s going to provide a big level of connectivity for folks from Detroit to come to Kalamazoo, Niles, Dowagiac area and then folks from Chicago,” said Joseph Szabo, from the Federal Railroad Administration. “It is going to provide tremendous economic opportunity.”

Technological advances that could bring more riders.

“If you factor in convenience, stress, the certainty of not getting tied up in traffic, then all of sudden commuting by passenger rail becomes a very viable option,” said Tom Carper, chairman of the board at Amtrak.

At full build, this rail service will allow people to get from Detroit, Mich. to Chicago in about three hours and forty-five minutes, beating out car travel.

“That is going to be a big help,” Amtrak rider Clifford Scott said. “I can save gas, save time on people coming to pick up. I can just hop right on the train. “

The service brings an additional option for those hoping to get around the Midwest.

“People need alternatives for transportation and fast trains are the thing of future,” Kalamazoo resident Bill Schomisch said.

This is just part of the Midwest plans for passenger rails. A 110-mile-per-hour rail service is also in the works for Chicago to St. Louis routes.
