Grape Road has reopened and power has been restored to hundreds of Mishawaka residents affected by an accident that knocked out electricity Sunday afternoon.

Around 12:45 p.m., officials shut down Grape Rd. between Catalpa Dr. and W. McKinley Ave. for six hours after an SUV hit a wooden utility pole.

Police say a Toyota 4Runner hit the pole at the intersection of Grape Rd. and Imus Dr., taking down power lines and a transformer box. The SUV ended up on the front lawn of a nearby home. The driver managed to get out of the SUV and was treated on-the-scene for minor injuries.

According to Lieutenant Williams of the Mishawaka Police Dept., the Toyota’s driver was going too fast given the slippery conditions and ended up losing control when another vehicle pulled out into his path.

Power was out in the area, including the entire Runaway Bay apartment complex and a handful of streetlights along Grape Rd. for nearly five hours. Mishawaka Utilities cut power to the lines as crews worked to reset the 25-foot tall wooden pole.

By 5:15 p.m., Grape Rd. reopened to normal traffic and electricity was restored across the immediate grid.
