Driver hits utility pole en route to hospital

St. Joseph County Police are investigating what caused a car to lose control on S.R. 933, hit a pole, and then crash into a cement block.

The accident happened Saturday afternoon just south of Auten Road in Clay Township.

The car had extensive damage, but the driver and passenger were able to make it out with non-life threatening injuries. Police say the female driver was rushing to the hospital because the man in the car had nearly overdosed.

She lost control of the vehicle and hit a pole that brought down power lines. A few blocks were closed as emergency crews extinguished the flames, and the driver and passenger were both taken to the hospital.
