Accident closes US 30, leaves 2 dead

Two Hamlet residents are dead after a car and semi truck crashed on US 30 Tuesday evening.

According to police, a car failed to yield the right of way to a semi-truck traveling on US 30. The semi struck the car, killing Floyd Hastings and Mary “Eddie” Carpenter.

The accident occurred at 6:45PM CDT and caused both lanes of US 30 to be closed. Both Hastings and Carpenter were pronounced dead at the scene by the Starke County Coroner’s Office.

The Starke County Sheriff Department, Indiana State Police, Koontz Lake and Hamlet Fire Departments, and Starke County EMS all responded to the accident.

At this time, alcohol is not believed to be a factor. The investigation into the accident is continuing.
