Even before Senator Larry Craig announced that he planned to resign, it appears that he was having second thoughts about it.
A Capitol Hill newspaper has obtained a voice message that Craig thought he was leaving for his lawyer, less than an hour before his news conference on Saturday. It turned out he had dialed the wrong number, so the message ended up being made public.
In it, Craig says that fellow Republican Senator Arlen Specter is willing to come to his defense and argue that Craig has been "railroaded." So, Craig says he's "reshaped" his statement a bit, to say only that it is his INTENT to resign -- apparently leaving the door open to a change of plans.
The newspaper, Roll Call, isn't saying who received the misdirected phone message -- except that it was a Washington, D.C. resident who's not involved in politics.
