Gas for $2.25 per gallon in Sturgis

In Sturgis, Michigan people were soaking up more than sun over the holiday weekend.

“We ran out of gas on Friday because we were so busy,” said Admiral Manager Erin Alldredge. “And it’s, every week it drops, every week it’s been like ten cents here and there, now we’re down to $2.26 (per gallon).

Dan Gage of Bronson came to Admiral to fill the tank of his truck, and portable gas containers for his boat and lawn mower. “I’m from the Bronson area, I work in Coldwater, and it’s $2.60 in Coldwater when I left there this morning.”

Needless to say, the summer driving season got off to a good start over the Memorial Day weekend. “I’m from Centreville, they got a Shell station over there, it’s $2.59 over there,” said Oakley Counter, as he filled up at Admiral.

When asked if he thought he’d ever see gas prices this low again, Counter replied, “Tell you the truth, no, I didn’t. That’s why I’m here now.”

Sturgis is a city of about 10-thousand residents. It is located some 50-miles east of South Bend, just North of LaGrange.

At mid day today, the highest gas price News Center 16 found in Sturgis was $2.29 per gallon. The lowest price was $2.25.

Kees Vanzelst is a Sturgis resident who was filling up for $2.26 a gallon today at Admiral. It was a happy homecoming for Vanzelst, who was returning from a trip to visit relatives in New York where gas was appreciably higher. “When we stopped there it was $2.95 and on the island it was $3.25,” Vanzelst said.

Even the manager of the Admiral noted that the Sturgis station was charging $2.72 for a gallon of no lead regular on May 16th—just before the freefall began.

“You keep hearing rumors that it’s going to go up to $4, and then it’s going to drop down to $2,” said Alldredge. “So I’m believing the $2 now, and not so much the $4.”

While no one seemed to be able to explain why prices were so much lower in Sturgis, the situation did not come as a complete surprise.

Some say that Sturgis has a reputation for competitive fuel pricing.

“You can go like anywhere around and from anywhere around in the county they’ll tell you that Sturgis is the cheapest,” said Alldredge.
