Soldier from Logansport caught in crossfire in Iraq, killed

A 20-year-old soldier from Logansport has died in fighting in Iraq.

Army representatives told the family of Private First Class Shawn Hensel that he was killed about 11:15 Monday night when he got caught in crossfire. The family was informed Tuesday. The Department of Defense had not released information about Hensel's death as of this morning.

Shawn Hensel left for Iraq in early April. He had served at Fort Lewis, Washington, since last July.

The last time Beth and David saw their son was in June of last year, when he was home on leave for 10 days.

David Hensel says his son's body will be flown home within the next couple of days.

Hensel attended Logansport High School and earned a general education development certificate before joining the Army. He got married last December.
