County councils and tax boards discuss IN income tax

County councils and tax boards throughout Indiana are debating whether to raise individual income taxes to help ease this year's property tax crunch.

During this year’s legislative session, lawmakers approved some relief plans and gave local governments more options to raise money on their own.

One of those options could be an income tax increase, which supporters say would spread the burden across a larger group of people.

For example, a study in one southwestern Indiana county showed a 1% income tax increase could result in a 60% cut of a homeowner's property taxes.
