David Snyder is not alone

We told you last week about Roseland Town Councilman, David Snyder, who spent a day in jail for not paying $100,000 in child support.

That has spurred a lot of comments from our viewers. Many of you asked us questions about the child support system in general and shared your personal experiences.

One of those people is Cathy Fenner. The father of her daughter, Catherine, owes her $25,000.

"I want to see this man pay for her support. It's not for me. It's for her," Fenner explains.

"I can't count on him to do it. There's courts, there's laws I'm supposed to count on, but that hasn't worked either. It's a 'catch me if you can.' I hate to say it, but that's the only way I can describe it."

Each county's prosecuting attorney's office deals with these types of
cases. At St. Joseph County's Child Support Services, there are 23,000 cases.

Kathy Dvorak is the director of that department. She says, overall, they are successful in collecting unpaid support (last year $24 million), but she understands the frustrations of those still waiting for their checks.

"A lot people think we have a magic wand or we can push a different key on the computer and we can automatically find out where someone is, where they're working, how much money they're making and automatically put our finger on them and bring them into court," Dvorak explains.

Last week, we heard from David Snyder, who told us he cannot afford the $100,000 he owes to his two sons in Texas. On Monday night, we spoke to his ex-wife, Julianne Mayfield.

"That is money due to my children," Mayfield says. "I have a 19-year-old son who is disabled. He is always going to need financial support in his life. He will never live on his own. So, that money would really make a stake in his future."

I asked Julianne what she wanted to say to David if he was watching our newscast.

"Make your kids your priority instead of yourself. That's what I would say to him."
