Congressman Joe Donnelly has his eye on a new farming bill that has yet to be approved by the Senate.
The farm bill passed in a House vote.
It would give more federal farm support and food assistance to farmers both here locally, and nationally.
Donnelly says he spoke with farmers from 12 counties here in northern Indiana asking them what they wanted to see happen with farming.
Many farmers say they hope to see more young people take over from their folks.
Alan Gilmer is a farmer and says, “There’s no entrepreneurs who risk more or have more at stake than our farmers. And we were able to put in a safety net underneath so if prices don't hold up to a certain point, we can make sure the family farm is safe the average age of farmers is getting older and older. We need younger people in this business and hopefully this will help.”
If the bill passes the Senate, it will then go to President Bush for consideration.
