For the second time in less than a month, a gas leak in South Bend led to the evacuation of several homes.

At around 1:00 Tuesday afternoon, a concrete contractor was working on the corner of Northshore and Lafayette when he cut into a gas line.

Across the river at James Madison Elementary, school officials evacuated almost 500 students.

Assistant Fire Chief Joe Lopez says his team is taking a more aggressive approach when dealing with leaks.

"We are just taking a little more precaution right now. Two weeks ago when we had the gas leak we did the same thing. We started blocking things off and securing the perimeter. Right now we're being a little more aggressive to make sure that everyone is out and the proper scene safety is being taken,” said Lopez

Students returned to their classrooms to gather their belongings after 25 minutes on the playground. They then headed back outside until dismissal at 2:20.
