Notre Dame scratched and crawled its way back again Friday night but this time a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the win from Tory Jackson did not go down as Notre Dame lost to West Virginia 53-51 in the Big East semifinals.

The loss snaps Notre Dame's six game win streak. The Irish will head into the NCAA Tournament with a 23-11 record. There's no question Notre Dame is in the big dance, but what seed will they be? Perhaps it will be somewhere between an 8 or 10 after a fabulous end to the season. The Irish find out officially on Sunday.

Da'Sean Butler led West Virginia with 24 points. His three midway through the 2nd half put the Mountaineers up 39-30.

But Ben Hansbrough led the Irish back. Hansbrough was clutch throughout the game, finishing with 17 points. The junior pulled Notre Dame within two with a reverse layin with 40 seconds left.

Notre Dame then got a big stop defensively and had the ball with 10 seconds to go and no timeouts. Jackson brought the ball up the floor but his three was short. Ty Nash couldn't get a rebound and the clock ran out.

Fittingly, the clock running out on the Irish at the 1st half was the difference in the game. Hansbrough best shot of the night---a three at the buzzer to close out the 1st half---did not count as the ball was still on his finger tips as the red light popped on.

Third-seeded West Virginia (26-6) will face eighth-seeded Georgetown in the championship game Saturday night. The Mountaineers are looking for their first title; the Hoyas a record eighth.

Butler banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer Thursday for a 54-51 victory over Cincinnati. The Mountaineers have won five straight and seven of eight.
