Indiana lawmakers are up against time in the state capital Friday night. They're facing a Sunday deadline to wrap up this General Assembly session, but there are still big disagreements on several issues.

The education funding bill was approved and the unemployment insurance bill is expected to pass soon, thus wrapping things up for this session, Friday night.

The stalemate boils down to the unemployment insurance bill and the portion of it that deals with a combination resort and aquarium complex in Warrick County.

Side issues have complicated negotiations during the session. One of those side issues is possible financial support for a proposed theme resort in Warrick County called Village Earth.

“That’s the other issue the democrats are holding out for is a sales tax increment finance area in Warrick County. This has been an issue that’s not successfully passed here a couple times but the speaker’s demanding it be added,” says Representative Brian Bosma.

“There’s some tax credits for employers that expand job opportunities now so that would encourage hiring. There’s also economic development project in southern Indiana that seems to have a strong developer who would be interested in moving forward on a major jobs project, but needs some incentives from the state,” says Senator John Broden.

The unemployment insurance bill is close to being passed. That bill would delay increased unemployment taxes on employers for another year.

Lawmakers are also facing the issue of finding a place to stay while in Indianapolis. With the Big 10 basketball tournament in the Circle City, there’s a pinch for hotel rooms. Many lawmakers have been booted out of their hotels, requiring them to go to other cities to find a place to stay.
