Now's the time to start caring for your lawn

Spring is just around the corner and while many of us have barely put away the shovels and snow blowers, it's time to start preparing our gardens and lawns.
Experts say now’s the time to focus on your lawn instead of waiting for temps to get much warmer; you should also have a good idea how much yard you want to cover, because that will affect how to treat it.
More and more businesses and homes are going the organic route with chemicals that can be safer but sometimes more costly; but whatever you decide, Greg Leyes from Ginger Valley says the best way to start is by fertilizing.
“You should use a fertilizer that has a crab grass preventative in it. That has a chemical that stops the dormant crab grass seeds from sprouting,” Leyes said.
“Some things that people do that they should not do is prune; you do not want to prune any of the spring blooming plants like Lilac bushes or Forsythia because the buds aren’t there now, they're just sticks right now.”
Next weekend Ginger Valley will host its annual Spring Show at the Granger location on S.R. 23, including seminars to answer your gardening questions, a tent sale, and much more. The event is free to attend.
