Wednesday night, Mishawaka proposed cutting 52 jobs to save money.
Thursday, Union-North United, which is LaVille schools, proposed 26 cuts.
Superintendent Terry Barker said it himself, 1.4 million dollars is a huge amount of money to cut, especially when their total budget is $10.5 million.
Barker says, “None of us like seeing this, we hate this.”
You can see the looks of confusion and disgust as the school board and the public hear 26 jobs could be eliminated. That includes 11-12 teachers, one administrative position that will not be filled after a retirement, and about 13 non-certified or support staff positions.
Board Member, Donald Berger says, “It's a very sad day. The number of students we have per teacher is pretty bad, especially in the elementary, anywhere from 24-29. It's up about five to seven students per teacher.”
Even without these changes, as a substitute aide in schools, Misty Callaway sees first hand everyday how hard it is for teachers. She and board members say parental involvement after school will be needed now more than ever.
Callaway says, “It's going to be rough dealing with a high school student and junior high school student. There's a lot of things going to be happening in 2011. Lunch prices are going up, we're all in a world of hurt.”
Barker says he knows this situation is bad, but other Hoosier districts have it worse.
“I've been told one of the suburban districts around Indianapolis made about a 40% budget reduction, so that's my wow factor.”
Barker says nothing is official until the school board votes in June.
