The city of Elkhart and nine counties in central and northern Indiana are teaming up to better protect the community.
The Fusion Center in Indianapolis is a network funded by Homeland Security to help officers get information about felons more quickly.
There are 43 Fusion Centers nationwide, and they act as a reference center for officers.
When the officers call to get information, the center gathers the data and sends it back while officers remain on the scene.
One call to the Fusion Center is the equivalent of the approximately 30 reference calls a detective or officer would have to make, which saves them valuable time.
“What we provide is one phone number anyone across the state can use, so if they happen to be from an area that’s not serviced by Crime Stoppers or they don’t know how to access an entity that's capable of investigating terrorism, for example, they can call and report the info they have,” said Douglas Johnson, liaison for the Fusion Center.
A different number is also available to the public to use. Anyone can contact the Fusion Center at 1-866-400-4432.
That number will be posted along the side of police cars in participating departments.
