A South Bend race track could soon see its final lap, unless a buyer steps up soon.
The South Bend Motor Speedway has cancelled the usual Friday night stock car races.
Plus, there are only two more demolition derby races planned.
Owner Mike Bird says he wants to sell the track and retire after a decrease in attendance and sales.
Bird says the car countdown this year is down by 20 cars a weekend compared to last year.
According to Bird’s financial figures, a new owner would have to put at least three hundred thousand dollars worth of renovations into the track.
“It’s just tough to do on a weekly basis anymore, and I'm finding out that a lot of other promoters are thinking the same way I am,” says Bird.
Two more demolition derby races are planned in September and October.
Bird hopes to have the track sold to new management in six months.
If that does not happen, the property could be used for commercial development and the track would have to be closed.
