Police Investigate Toddler Abuse

A two-year-old boy from Elkhart faces life threatening injuries and remains in the hospital after severe head injuries.

Middlebury Police are investigating a child abuse case involving the mother's boyfriend.

On Wednesday night, 27-year-old Eric Kline was arrested on preliminary aggravated battery charges.

Police say that on Monday, Kline was babysitting his girlfriend, Mariana Ortega's, toddler.

That morning, Kline brought the boy to the Middlebury Fire Department for medical attention.

Kline claimed the boy had fallen and injured his head; the boy was then flown to the hospital.

Child Protective Services subsequently ordered an investigation.

Police searched Kline's house on Main Street in Middlebury and found enough evidence to make an arrest.

The Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office says that charges are expected to be filed on Thursday.

In the meantime, Kline is being held at the Elkhart county jail.

Bond has yet to be set.
