Women buy the most herbal products but Art Gara is among a growing number of male customers.
"Today I bought some Co q 10 for the heart. I bought some green tea as an antioxidant," says consumer Art Gara.
Now in most stores right along with pills for women there are shelves just for men.
Dr. Don Novey, a Complementary Medicine Expert says, "The classic men's issues are things like prostate health, they may have problems with male-patterned baldness."
Doctor Don Novey is a national expert in complementary medicine.
Neil Levin is a certified clinical nutritionist for "now" at a Chicago area supplement company.
He says sex drive is another issue men deal with using vitamins.
The remedies they agree on for prostate function both support Sawpalmetto and Lycopeine.
Nutritionist Neil Levin says, "We're familiar with that in tomatoes, the red pigment in tomatoes."
For muscle building there is Creatine and for blood circulation and the heart, they agree there's evidence for Ginko Biloba, omega fish oils, Picnogenol and l-Arginine.
Flaxseed spread on your food may help protect against heart disease and cancer and doctor Novey says it may even slow down hair loss.
"Very useful for decreasing some of the male hormone effects that lead to male patterned baldness," says Levin.
As for the issue of erectile dysfunction the herb Yohimbe is in question.
Novey and Levin are both concerned about unwanted side-effects.
"It's not going to be the first thing we recommend," says Levin.
For the problem of cholesterol Levin says "yes" to Sytrinol but Novey says "no".
On every remedy, they agree it is crucial that patients follow the directions on the bottles and tell their doctor they are taking them.
"If I had to make one comment, it's that herbs are drugs, and all the same rules apply," says Dr. Novey.
One other thing the doctors agree on supplements can't cure serious disease.
They are best used with medicines you already take or to keep you from getting sick.
