Elkhart Soldier Dies in Iraq

A Jimtown High School graduate was killed while serving in Iraq.

Army Specialist David Wilkey, Junior, 22 years old, died Monday after a roadside bomb hit his Humvee in Iraq.

Wilkey was a 2003 graduate from Jimtown and a member of the wrestling and football team.

Three years after graduating from high school, he enlisted in the army.

Family members say he joined the army to help support his family.

Wilkey leaves behind a wife and two children, with a third child on the way.

“I was proud of him, that he was doing what he needed to do to make it ... he wasn't asking people for help ... he was doing what he needed to do to take care of them,” said David Wilkey, Senior.

“... And I was upset with him because he joined ... because I didn't want to lose him,” added David’s stepmother, Margaret Wilkey.

A memorial service is planned for Wilkey at Fort Riley in Kansas.

A visitation and funeral service will be in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where Wilkey lived before he moved here.
