The amount of Elkhart city water being used to fight the fire has strained the municipal water system.
So much city water is going to the firefighting effort, that residents are being asked to voluntarily cut back on their water use.
“We monitor the water levels in elevated tanks non stop,” said the co-director of the Department of Public Works.
“Shortly after the fire stated, we could see our demand jump and it just gets to a certain level where we don't want to put the community at risk.”
The city’s largest industrial customers were also approached and asked to cut back on their water use.
