Before they laid Balmer to rest at Southlawn Cemetery Thursday afternoon, his fellow airman and ranking officers saluted Tech Sergeant Ryan Balmer one final time.
"Be proud of him. We are. And don't forget him, because what he gave us is more than we'll ever be able to return," Air Force Commander Daniel Simmons said after Thursday's services.
About 200 people drove through the gates, under the garrison flag, to see Balmer laid to rest.
Friends, family, the law enforcement community and even some who did not know the airman came to say their final good-bye.
And even if they were not at the burial, many hearts in Michiana were with the Balmer family Thursday as they made their way from the church to Southlawn Cemetary.
